Foundation grant supports Ema Shin commission with ATW
In 2024, the Australian Tapestry Foundation supported Melbourne-based artist Ema Shin with a grant to produce the soft sculpture Hearts of Absent Women, being woven in conjunction with the Australian Tapestry Workshop. This grant application was supported by the Australian Tapestry Workshop where Ema first learnt tapestry weaving during an artist residency in 2012, and Ararat Gallery TAMA where Ema has previously shown her work. Ema has a Korean background, was raised in Japan and arrived in Australia in 2010. Ema’s Korean grandfather kept a treasured family tree book featuring 32 generations, yet it only included male descendants' names, not daughters. Her work is a direct response to the many unknown and unrecognised women throughout history, and her Hearts of Absent Women' series is dedicated to them, celebrating their lives and emotions. Ema Shin is represented by Gallerysmith.
